Why was the Blood so fakely red in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street?

It was a cinematographical decision, that showed Sweeney's growing obsession with revenge and violence and also made the movie more artistically impressive. It won an oscar for best achievement in art direction, partly due to this decision.Why was the Blood so fakely red in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street?
I think it was done on purpose to contrast the bleak colouring of the rest of the film. It was as if blood was all Sweeney could see, and it was the most important to him.
